Board Member Spotlight – Gail Sanders
Gail H. Sanders is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Upon graduating from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, she moved to Maryland to accept a teaching position. After receiving a master’s degree from The Johns Hopkins University and teaching for nine years in public and private schools, she changed the direction of her career and began working in the fields of marketing and public relations. For the next 38 years, she worked at the senior management levels of financial institutions, including banks and credit unions, and large nonprofits, such as the United Way of Central Maryland and the YMCA of Central Maryland. She also held the position of Executive Director for the Anne Arundel Community Foundation and was an adjunct faculty member at Goucher College where she taught public relations writing and event planning and management in their certificate program. In January 2022, she retired from Tower Federal Credit Union as their Assistant Vice President of Business Development.
Throughout her career, she has served on boards of directors for 13 nonprofits and associations. In addition, she was a member of the Truist Advisory Board for metropolitan Baltimore. Currently, she serves on the boards of directors of Consumer Action, Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Maryland (CCCSMD), Partners in Care, and Rebuilding Together – Howard County.
In recognition of her commitment and dedication to the community, she has been awarded the Congressional Achievement Award, Annual Governor’s Volunteer & Service Award, Mayoral Commitment Partnership Award, Federally Employed Women National Chapter’s Essential Piece Award, the YWCA of Anne Arundel County’s Tribute to Women in Industry Award and the Greater Baltimore Opportunities Industrialization Center’s Key to Success Award. As a result, she was selected as one of “Maryland’s Top 100 Women” in 1998, 2000 and 2011, at which time, she was inducted into their Circle of Excellence. This year, she was inducted in to the Central Maryland Chamber of Commerce’s Hall of Fame with the President’s Award for her community service at their annual meeting.
She is also a Certified Credit Union Financial Counselor and feels strongly that all people deserve to feel financially secure which has drawn her to the current boards on which she sits and especially to CCCSMD. She looks forward to providing support for CCCSMD’s mission.
Gail lives in Elkridge, MD with her husband, Dave, and son, Oliver. Aside from her nonprofit volunteer service, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, walking, traveling, riding her bike, reading and relaxing at their Bethany Beach home.
